Writerly Quote of the Month

Have something to say, and say it as clearly as you can. That is the only secret.
-Matthew Arnold

[Pictured: Arundathi Roy]

  1. What is 'something'? What is 'say'? What is 'clearly'? What is 'can'? I'd prefer some subtlety also.

  2. Oh, I think you know. But in case you don't...

    Something: that it's not just stylistic egoistic masturbation;

    Say: speak, write, yell, cry, voice;

    clearly: opposite of unclearly?;

    can: to the best of your ability

    But fair enough about the subtlety. Could do with some of that some of the time. But not always. Sometimes you just want the big crash, the big boom, the big kiss. How subtle is Dickens??

  3. Sometimes very. 'Big' is such a relative term.

  4. Except when in reference to elephants. I KNOW a big elephant when I see one.

  5. It was great meeting you and Ai! Thank you both for coming! :)
